Notre Dame de France, situated in London’s Soho in Leicester Place… It is a circular building from the 1700’s…

The church was established in the 1800’s. Most likely 1861. It is a quiet place to escape the hustle and bustle of London. It’s founder was Father Charles Faure of the Society of Mary Order, the Marist Fathers. (I attended one of the schools of their order as a child).
But although the architecture and the history of the building are interesting, to the one thing I would like to direct your attention is to a most unusual mural…

In the Lady Chapel there are three murals painted by Jean Cocteau in 1959. They depict biblical scenes from the life of Mary.

And a very strange figure of a man…

And it is said that Cocteau would light a candle and «speak» to the image of the Virgin Mary every time he would arrive to work on the mural…

I bring this artwork to your attention because it not only is significant because of who painted it, but because of the way he approached the subject matter. Do not you think it is most unusual the way he has depicted Mary, the other Mary, possibly the Magdalene, as well as some of the onlookers at the foot of the cross where Jesus was crucified?
I’ve always had quite a liking for Jean Cocteau’s work, but I’m not sure why
