Faith saved us from the savages that we were, losing faith makes us savages again

GRACIAS – CHEERS

Well the model, Tognina Gonsalvus, born on the Isle de France in 1572, and the daughter of Petrus Gonsalvus, the Gentil Giant of Tenerife, was born with hypertrichosis, like her father…
But let us get to the point here. The painting, by Lavinia Fontana (Bologna 1552) was completed in 1583 and on June 4, 2023, it sold at auction for 1,55 million euros. The lot had been appraised at no more than 120,000 euros. This is not only a record for the works of Fontana but a major accomplishment for women artists of the remote past whose works are gaining more and more value. This will help all women artists, and if the contemporary ones create with such energy and talent, it will certainly help them gain parity with male artists.
Let me explain that Lavinia Fontana was one of those rare examples in the existence of women in Art History. She received recognition in her lifetime as an artist. She was the first woman artist (that we know of) who had her own studio. She received various commissions from Spain and was appointed the official painter to Pope Clement VIII.
The auction was held at the Castle of Artigny, nearby Tours by the French Auction House of Rouillac.

And here I leave you with the video that I dedicated to another great woman artist…

I have always been fascinated… No, not by Joan Miró, but by the fame he has achieved… It has always been a mystery to me and I would really like to know what people see in his paintings, of course, those people that actually like them. I have the impression that if it hadn’t been for his family, who knew a lot of important people and had connections…and money…and who organized and opened the Joan Miró Foundation, no one would remember Joan today… And they had to open a foundation, I mean, where else would they put all those paintings? And I am referring only to his paintings not to his person who I have no reason to believe that he was anything other than a bang on good chap.

+++
I even made a video of this artist. What do you think?
¿Fenomenales, no?

Here are the three that I like the most… Phenomenal, aren’t they? You can tell that Joan put a lot of effort into them, even to find a suitable title, well maybe not and he just called them Blue Immersion.

Gracias…

If you’re a fan of Joan Miró, if you consider him a great painter, and you are fascinated by his paintings, tell me, explain them to me because I can’t make heads or tails of them. And I’m not talking about Miró the guy, he probably would have been a kind and friendly person, I didn’t know him. I simply limit myself to criticizing his artistic work exclusively.

ASK
Did I hear you right?
Did you really say that I can ask
and that you will give me whatever I want?
So my friend, then I’d say
give me a rainbow.
No!
Instead,
give me a magic tornado,
one that would sweep from the earth all the ugliness,
all the misfortunes, all the pain,
suffering,
disease.
A storm with a magic broom to sweep away
everything that we’re afraid of.
Let it’s flash floods,
instead of destruction, wash away the sadness,
wash away the pain,
so that after the rain
we can smile
and forget all our hardships.
+++
This poem does not imply that the damages caused by tornadoes are valuable and good, instead it refers to the idea of a cleansing storm that would only wipe from our midst negative things and leave all the good people and good things unharmed. It is figurative and most certainly not literal.
Thank you.

Oranges are the symbol of our Valencia and the most obvious things you will see if you walk through our streets in autumn and winter… Naturally then, when I was commissioned to do a painting about the city I chose oranges. Here it is…
GRACIAS – CHEERS

I’ve been that grain of sand beneath a seagull’s black beak,
that held the tide from swallowing the beach.
I’ve been the single rock that children’s hands couldn’t reach,
that ocean’s bathed
with tides
on days
when lonely spirits dreamed of love…
I thought I had accomplished all that I came to do,
and I would be returned to where I lived,
but time has passed,
a million days,
I’ve been forgotten,
why such delay?
When lonely spirits dreamt of peace…
You might not recognise me if you see me again,
I will no longer be the one I was.
The salty shores,
the brilliant sun,
the thought of being so far from home…
I’ve done all I was asked to do, my mission’s success,
has surely been recorded and well known,
but still I linger here,
no hand has come for me yet,
perhaps I’m meant to walk these lands
pretending to forget…

GRACIAS…
