I am almost positive that you do not know this artist. So I will tell you a bit about her, but I do encourage you to look further on, especially if you are interested in women artists and in abstract art. Suzy Frelinghuysen was an artist and an opera singer born in Newark, New Jersey (US) in 1911.

Suzy’s father was the president of the Mutual Benefit Life Insurance Co. of New Jersey. Her grandfather, Frederick T. Frelinghuysen was Secretary of State under US President Chester A. Arthur), and her great-great-uncle, Theodore Frelinghuysen had been a senator from New Jersey.

Although Suzy studied voice, she always displayed an interest in painting. Her training in art was mainly through tutors in New Jersey and in her many and frequent trips to Europe. Then in 1935 she got married to North American artist, and advocate for American abstract art, George L.K. Morris. He was a great influence upon her career as an artist. Their home, and studios, in Lenox, Massachusetts has been converted into a museum.

Morris introduced her to the work of European artists like Picasso, Léger, Braque, and Juan Gris. This led her to the search which yielded work that leaned towards an abstract Cubist manner. She joined the American Abstract Artists (AAA/1937). Then in 1938 Suzy became the first woman to have a painting placed in the permanent collection of A.E. Gallatin’s Museum of Living Art. She also took part at the Salon des Réalités Nouvelles, in Paris, and exhibited also in Rome and Amsterdam. And in 1943, her artwork was included in Peggy Guggenheim’s show Exhibition by 31 Women at the Art of This Century gallery in New York.

From 1947 to 1950 Suzy sang at the New York City Opera and the New Orleans Opera. Bronchitis made her stop and in 1951 she returned to being a full-time painter.

Frelinghuysen died of a stroke at the age of 76 in Massachusetts. Her paintings hang at the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA), the Philadelphia Museum of Art, the Smithsonian American Art Museum, the Carnegie Art Institute, as well as in her home and studio museum in Lenox, Massachusetts.

TVamos a comenzar por decir que esto no es arte publico ni arte callejero. Esto es una vergüenza y una fealdad que está por doquier en nuestras ciudades europeas y yo me pregunto ¿Por qué será? Y la respuesta es muy simple, porque a nadie le importa y mucho menos a la policía.

Y tú, sí tú que lees esto, ¿Te importa que tus calles y tus fachadas estén así de feas?

THREADS OF SMOKE 

Threads of smoke,

that rise like calligraphy…

The words of a strange

and unknown language,

that float in the wind,

and for a second in time

create spectacles to

seduce the senses

and then disappear,

like those who flee,

like those who hide their face…

But those who do not fear,

never doubt,

never run,

never hide.

Their faces look bravely towards the sun

and their eyes receive no harm.

Unlike those who face the sun

and melt like candles

that have burnt throughout the night…

You, Father of orphans

and protector of widows,

who lives in the holiest of places,

you who calms our grief,

and paints a smile upon our faces.

Father of wonder

who liberates the captive

and comforts the tormented,

liberator of the poor and discontented,

make a home for us, inactive

and in need,

and free us from our greed…

Creo que no me equivoco al decir que Norman Rockwell es uno de los artistas más famosos y más reconocidos de Estados Unidos, porque lo es… Rockwell, se puede decir que pintaba la cultura de esa gran nación, plasmaba la cotidianeidad de ese pueblo en sus telas o ilustraciones con esmero y con gran sentido del humor. La revista estadounidense The Saturday Evening Post está llena de portadas ilustradas por este pintor e ilustrador norteamericano… Rockwell también hizo portadas para la revista de los Boy Scouts of America y fue un pintor prolífico con mas de cuatro mil obras terminadas… Fue un pedazo de pintor el tío. Ilustró más de 40 libros, clásicos como Tom Sawyer y Huckleberry Finn, e hizo retratos de los presidentes estadounidenses Eisenhower, Kennedy, Johnson y Nixon, y de otros famosos como Judy Garland y el Coronel Sanders (1973) y como si fuera poco también creó obras de arte para anuncios de Coca-Cola, Jell-O, y General Motors… Pero Rockwell no es considerado un artista serio, sino uno kitsch y muchos para rebajarlo de categoría decían que no era un artista, que lo que lo calaba bien era el título de ilustrador. Esto no le molestaba a Norman pues eso mismo se consideraba el… pero más adelante en su carrera Rockwell si pintó cuadros con temas serios como el racismo de muchos en EEUU y la falta de derechos civiles por los cuales lucharon los negros al comienzo de la década de 1960. Cuadros como «El problema con que vivimos» (1964) ejemplifica esa seriedad en sus pinturas… Norman Rockwell nació en Nueva York en 1894 y murió a los 84 años en Stockbridge, Massachusetts en 1978.

I think I am not wrong in saying that Norman Rockwell is one of the most famous and recognized artists of the United States, because he is… Rockwell, can be said to have painted the culture of that great nation, capturing the everyday life of that people in his canvases and illustrations with care and a great sense of humor. The North American magazine The Saturday Evening Post is full of covers illustrated by this North American painter and illustrator… Rockwell also made covers for the Boy Scouts of America magazine. He was a prolific painter with over four thousand completed works… He was quite a painter, indeed. He illustrated more than 40 books, including classics like Tom Sawyer and Huckleberry Finn, and made portraits of American presidents like Eisenhower, Kennedy, Johnson and Nixon, and of other celebrities like Judy Garland and Colonel Sanders (1973) and, as if that weren’t enough, he also created artworks for advertisements of Coca-Cola, Jell-O, and General Motors… But Rockwell is not considered a serious artist, but rather a kitsch one, and many tried to downgrade him by saying that he was not an artist, that he was better defined by the title of illustrator. This did not bother Norman as he considered himself just that… but later in his career, Rockwell did paint serious subjects such as the racism of many in the U.S. and the lack of civil rights fought for by African Americans at the beginning of the 1960s. Paintings like «The Problem We All Live With» (1964) exemplify that seriousness in his artwork… Norman Rockwell was born in New York in 1894 and died at the age of 84 in Stockbridge, Massachusetts in 1978.

Este cuadro fue expuesto en la casa blanca del Presidente Barack Obama (2011)… El cuadro pone de relieve a la niña Ruby Bridges de 6 años camino a la escuela primaria William Franz, que era solo para niños blancos, el 14 de noviembre de 1960, en Nueva Orleans. Por las amenazas de violencia contra ella, Ruby va escoltada por cuatro agentes federales y en la pared, detrás de ella, se ven los insultos de nigger y las siglas KKK junto a un tomate aplastado y salpicado que algún racista lanzó contra la pared.

This painting was exhibited in President Barack Obama’s White House (2011)… The painting highlights 6-year-old Ruby Bridges on her way to William Franz Elementary School, which was for white children only, on November 14, 1960, in New Orleans. Due to threats of violence against her, Ruby is escorted by four federal marshals, and on the wall behind her, the insults of nigger and the KKK initials can be seen alongside a squashed and splattered tomato that some racist threw against the wall.

Una obra de arte, digamos un cuadro, no surge de la nada, ni tampoco evoluciona. La evolución no existe en el arte (ni en nada diría yo). La teoría de la evolución fue presentada solo para desafiar la realidad y la realidad es la Creación. Una obra de arte es una creación de arte que fluye de la mente, de la experiencia y del gusto del pintor artista. Os presento a mi próximo cuadro, hoy todavía en vías de desarrollo, titulado «Vivat» (que quiere decir «Viva» en latín). De la fuerza de la luna y del sol se logra la fuerza interna del ser humano. Estos dos focos celestiales nos guían y nos enseñan la gran diferencia que hay entre lo claro y lo oscuro. El famoso chiaroscuro que es muy importante en el arte. Cada color es símbolo de un tipo u otro de esa misma fuerza, con la cual se vive, con la cual se sueña, con la cual se crea y se ama… Somos navegantes, viajeros… Somos pensamientos y memorias y tenemos muchas ganas de llegar a nuestro hogar…

A work of art, let’s say a painting, does not arise out of nothing, nor does it evolve. Evolution does not exist in art (or in anything, I would say). The theory of evolution was presented only to challenge reality and reality is creation. A work of art is a creation of art that flows from the mind, experience, and taste of the painter artist. I present to you my next painting, still in development today, titled «Vivat» (which means «Long Live» in Latin). The force of the moon and the sun provide the internal strength of the human being. These two celestial bodies guide us and teach us the great difference between light and darkness. The famous chiaroscuro which is very important in art. Each colour is a symbol of one type or another of that same force, with which one lives, with which one dreams, with which one creates and loves… We are travellers, we are thoughts, we are memories and we are longing to go home…

Aunque no esté terminado, el cuadro ya habla por si mismo y transmite su mensaje. Su mundo quizá no sea el nuestro pero tiene el mismo merito y también su desafío. Así es el arte… El arte, al fin y al cabo, es la búsqueda, pero la búsqueda de algo que el pintor tiene que encontrar para que de fruto…

Even though it is not finished, the painting already speaks for itself and conveys its message. Its world may not be ours but it has the same merit and also its same challenges. That’s art… Art, after all, is the search, but the search that must yield fruit…
