#poem, «Dead Flowers» (An Euro-Ku)

DEAD FLOWERS
(Euro-Ku)

Here today burned tomorrow
growing close to walls
reaching to the sand
that is bathed by the sea…

Swaying with the rhythm of the wind
that travels where you
do not know…

Only God knows
where the wind goes
but dry flowers
dance…

Just in case you do not know what a Euro-Ku is…

I invented the Euro-Ku in 2022 in an effort to compose a Haiku that would be fitting the history, culture, language and spirit of a Western poet. As I wanted to honour the traditional Japanese form, I adapted it to something that would be more fitting to a European. I decided that the syllabic count was unnecessary as it only works with the nuances and forms of the Japanese language and not with Latin, Greek, Germanic or Slavic languages. So in the Euro-Ku you do not have to worry about counting syllables. The Euro-Ku has three parts (stanzas) but they can be as long or as short as you want or need them to be. However, the verses have to flow evenly, smoothly and reasonably into each other. No phrases that disappear into outer space. And finally the Euro-Ku must be accompanied by a photograph, painting, drawing or any other form of illustration done by the author, Try it…
