I am sure you have heard of Edward Hopper and I am sure you have all seen the painting «American Gothic», so here is the history…
Tell me what you think of these two painters…

Thank you, Francesco, for today’s art lesson. I know both painters and their biographies, but it is always good to be reminded how special they were

They were both painting during stark times — war, poverty. American Gothic being painted in 1930 was at the beginning of the Great Depression. You can see in the farm couple’s eyes that life was hard and they knew harder times lay ahead. Nighthawks captures the realization that World War II was going to be like no other war and would not soon be over.

Very good points and analysis Janet. The farmer is standing next to his adult daughter. Some people say that they remember the painting as being the farmer and the wife and both looking straight forward. Does this resonate with you?

I guess I knew sometime that it was the farmer’s daughter, but I’d forgotten that it wasn’t his wife. That adds a whole other level of sadness and determination to the painting.

Yes, the painting has caused some controversy and conversation among those who remembered it one way and how it is, which is how it was always…
