#poem, «The Denial»

(Image by Francisco Bravo Cabrera/All Rights Reserved)

I felt the rhythm of their marching feet
as they pounded the asphalt of my sunny street,
I heard their cadence, strong men singing
and I learned the words
and I joined them singing…

With my black beret and my M-16
like Ché Guevara through jungles deep
where serpents hang from every tree,
I have walked alone
as the silent one…

The silent one that never thinks
that never cries
that never blinks,
that truth so precious will deny,
regretting nothing
not even sighs
that lovingly added to words no one said
‘cause those words had been better saved
for the dead…

And I say now to you who knows something about me,
if you choose to disclose it you know I’ll deny it,
the rumours, the gossip, the stories of war,
I’ll deny every single one for this I abhor,

And though you know they are true
and you know those things happened
but I’ll deny them again
and again, and again!
I remind you,
I feel no regret
and those things I’ll forget
and I’ll deny first of all
that I’ve been lost without you.
