
Another great woman artist that you may not have heard of or much about, Sonja Sekula (or Sonia Sekula). She was born in Switzerland in 1918. She was an abstract expressionist who met and worked with most of the surrealists during her exile in New York (1942). She also travelled to Mexico where she met Leonora Carrington and Frida Kahlo. During that time she also spent time in the western United States getting to know the Indians of those areas. Later she met Peggy Guggenheim who offered her a solo exhibition. Her end was tragic. She hanged herself in her Zurich studio in 1963. She suffered much from mental illness…
