#opinion, Dear Diary, P.#71

I’ve got to say, dear diary, that I did not choose my life. I waited too long to learn, to be what I wanted to be now seems like a dream I dreamt a million years ago. I let my parents influence me towards science or law and for them those were the only two viable alternatives and the only choices for education. So naturally I thought so too… Because my parents were scientist they were brought to the US, and I think to give me a better life they chose their home base in Miami, although their work was in some far away place that I’ve no idea about. But, reference study, I did three years of medical school somewhere in Central America, and later I looked for an Army recruiter, walked in and volunteered. And I will never regret it because although I was not an immigrant, I did benefit from living in the US and I felt it was my duty to pay back.

But although I did gain some tremendously valuable experience in the military, all it led me was to civilian law enforcement in Miami-Dade County, Florida, (it was Dade County in my day)… I finally rebelled and studied psychology and Art, and my Art was through the Theatre Department at uni…

But what I really would have liked to do…being that I love to sing and dance…what I would have loved to have been was a Pip. Singing back up for Gladys Knight…

    1. I would have loved it, one white guy in the group to add variety…

Even if you weren’t a pip, I could see you in a band somewhere. You could have even joined the one I was in – but that would have made us the 5 Skins. Think about it 😀

I played guitar in the band, but it has to be said that I and the rest of the group were crap. From an early age though I played the piano which meant that I should have concentrated on playing the keyboard. My fingers weren’t really suited to playing guitar strings.

      4. That always happens in a band, one wants to play guitar no matter what. I started with the guitar then switched to bass and then to keys and then back to bass… Nah, I bet you was a good skiffle band…

I think I would have been better at playing the tea chest or comb & paper

No. We were a typically 60s type British group. I was only about 14 at the time and that was in 1964

Of the band name, it sounds like something early adolescent males would find cool because of the implied body part. I can remember sitting at the family dinner table when my father said something about making out well and my seventh grade classmate and I looked at each other, giggling that Dad said making out.

I really love the way this is written… says a lot in a few very relatable words, yet entirely personal and unique, with a fun ending to top it off. You did and are doing it all, including living the dream as an incredibly talented fine artist, but yes, we all want to be in a band, at heart. :))
