THE MONKEES «DAILY NIGHTLY«

It seems that many people dismiss these guys because they were a «band» created for a television show, but hold on a minute here. Although there’s no doubt that they were a prefab band (1966), the guys (Peter Tork, Mike Nesmith, Davy Jones, and Micky Dolenz) realized they were becoming a band and started to refine themselves, to learn more about music, to write their own songs, and to develop a style that even set the standard in the music of their time. For example, Micky Dolenz was one of the first musicians of the 1960s to acquire a Moog synthesizer and he used it for the first time in this song from the 1967 album «Pisces, Aquarius, Capricorn & Jones, Ltd.», a song written by Mike Nesmith.
GRACIAS – CHEERS
Micky Dolenz was Circus Boy for those who remember him.

I enjoyed watching ‘Corky’ before he became famous as a drummer in the Monkees – a group that was created in the hope that they would become the American Beatles.

Hehehe… Although I have come to appreciate some of their later works, and especially «Last Train to Clarksville», a song I still consider one of my faves, the Monkees never had a chance of even becoming the shadow of The Beatles!

You’re right! I just remembered that.

I still listen to the Monkees because I like the music, but it was always my understanding that most of them were not real musicians. I could be wrong about that, but’s that what I always understood to be true.

It was true, but not all, Mike Nesmith was a musician and the others learned and became ones too. Their last 2 albums were done by themselves as musicians…
