Well our King (Spain) does not wear a crown, mainly because our Constitution says that the King is proclaimed not Crowned, and his portraits are not as «kingly» as this one. He doesn’t hold the Sovereign’s Sceptre or the Sovereign’s Orb. But Phillip VI has the look of royalty all over, especially when he meets members of the government or foreign dignitaries with his elegantly gained 55 years and 1,97m of height in a slim, muscular frame of 90 kilos. And next to our Queen, they make the most handsomest Royal couple in the world.

But now back to King Charles III of England. He paints and here are some examples of his work…

There are many more and I would suggest, if you are interested, you look for them. I understand that at auction they have gained much value now that he is king. Reference the quality, not bad. They look like watercolour. Reference the theme, topic and composition, not as good. The usual bucolic painting of a castle, trees, mountains and nothing more.
But what do you think?

Firstly, I have to say that your Royal couple look extremely elegant. Secondly, I’m guessing that King Charles, and other people such as Sir Winston Churchill, have used painting as a means of escape from their everyday duties. They don’t have to make their name in the art world, and it’s like everything, if you don’t have to make money from it, it’s a lot more enjoyable.

I’ve read that some of his paintings are notching up millions and I think that the main advantage of possessing a piece of artwork by King Charles III is the historical significance and personal touch that it brings to any art collection. I mean, his work isn’t awful – they are merely ordinary – and obviously amateur. He looks like what he is, a hobby artist. His pictures are nice efforts but no one would think they were worth putting on the market if they did not have his name attached. You’d have to be a very strong royalist indeed to pay out for one. Also – the poor man has to do something with his time

You’ve said it quite well Aiva. Yes, his work is not awful. We’ve seen much, much worse from others who pretend much, much more. He is unpretentious and enjoys painting and I can respect that. And of course, if his name was not attached to the work they would have no value anywhere… Thank you so much Aiva, Happy New Year and all the best!

It’s a pleasant hobby and he is not as bad a many alleged artists. He is neither the first nor the last high profile person who took up painting as a hobby later in life. Your monarchs do look very elegant and almost early 20th century.
