Music to Brighten a Very Hot Sunday!

This is one of my favourite songs of all time, the very well known Rodgers and Hammerstein «My Favorite Things» (sorry for the misspelling but that was how the composer wrote it), from the 1959 Broadway show. It was first sung by Mary Martin playing Maria. Then, came the 1965 movie The Sound of Music, and Julie Andrews made the song hers.

But when I first heard Coltrane’s version, well, I could not believe it! He played a soprano saxophone, which had been given to him by Miles Davis back in 1960, and he blew the song off the charts (musical charts that is, where the chord changes are written). He changed the G chord progression of the original to E minor and E major changes over these he and McCoy Tyner (piano) did their solos. Incredible! He changed the happy Sound of Music song into an Indian meditative chant!

John Coltrane recorded the song in 1960 with his new ensemble consisting of Elvin Jones on drums, McCoy Tyner on piano and Steve Davis on bass. He released the song in the album by the same name in 1961. It immediately became a concert favourite and a jazz standard. He played it at the 1963 Newport Festival.

This is an incredible tune. I love it both ways, by Julie Andrews and by Coltrane. What do you think?

And I could not leave you without the original…

Cheers…

I will always appreciate Anderw’s vocals on the original theater soundtrack, but come on, compared to Coltrane? No comparison. Coltrane’s key changes, flawless runs, trills, expressive intonation, and syncopated rhythm elevate this simple song to a whole other level. Coltrane makes that sax sing like no one else can!

Saludos.

When I was a little girl I sang this sound track all the time. I love this song as well. My voice was in much better shape when I was young, I sang a solo in choir, of «Climb Every Mountain.» It makes me smile to know that you enjoyed this soundtrack. One of the things I love about your sharing music is that you like many kinds of music even though you are a jazz musician (and a very good one) and that your art carries over that love! Blessings our friends, Joni

    1. I have always loved that movie and that soundtrack as well as Julie Andrews’s voice. But the Coltrane version! Wow! Love at first listen! I am glad that you like it as well and I can imagine you must have sang that song fabulously! Great Joni! Thank you! And blessings to you and Scott!
