This is an image of my latest painting titled «Sunrise Over Your Battlefield». As you can see this is a genuine abstract painting. No figures here, no similarities to anything in the natural world, as it should be, according to the rules of art.
It also has a reference, internal naturally. The reference is a philosophical approach to the way we sense, feel or realise things when we are faced with adversity, danger, suffering or anything else stressful. The sun does not shine the same on the beach, when you are sipping your Margaritas under the warm, comforting rays, as it does when you are being showered with bullets, bombs and rockets…
Abstract art is very difficult, but if you create your story, in your mind, then perhaps attempt to illustrate them, and after you do, you can extract all the elements that would make your painting figurative, then you will have an abstract beginning to what would be a finished product. Abstract art faces all the problems and challenges of figurative art. It is not something random or intuitive. Art is contrived, planned, researched and prepared.
I will post the finished version soon…

Cheers…
Abstraction leaves the door open for the viewer to find their own meaning behind what the artist has presented. In that way, it is more personal, more emotional, and more real. We are unburdened by the need to figure out what they artist was trying to convey and given the freedom to find what it says to us as individuals. Looking forward to seeing this when it is completed. My best to you, dear friend!

Yes, it is in the purity of colours that emotions are mirrored and always provides for a personal interpretation. The artists reference is internal and known only to him/her. Thank you so much my friend! Appreciate it and it will be finished soon.

For one so dead set against strict definition, you certainly flaunt definition describing some of your works. This (abstract) work does not appeal to me with the power of your figurative pieces. «Contrived, planned, researched, and prepared» yes but unless the artist has a huge palette of emotion (feelings) and life (experience) to draw upon, the artist cannot plan a mood or scenario, cannot contrive to sway an audience emotionally. I maintain the power of all the effort of contrivance, planning, research, and preparation amounts to nothing if an artist has no foundation of personal thought and emotion to build upon. Argue if you will that a sterile mind could «create.» So, my friend can a bovine relieving itself walking from one clutch of grass to another.

I fully agree with you. The artist, writer, playwright, choreographer, composer, actor and anyone engaged in the creative process must be well nourished with experiences, emotive memories and the ability to express them, no longer in their raw state, but artistically. What I meant to say was that to paint an abstract piece, the artist must begin with a reference, just like with a figurative piece, say a landscape. That reference holds the emotional energy and from there the painting begins to take shape naturally and purely using only colours to express it. The rest is up to the observer. My abstracts do not, and will not, look like anything I have ever seen in the natural world, but to whoever stands in from of them, they could look like something, could remind them of something, could evoke an emotion. Of course it will never match the emotion of the painter because that remains an internal reference for him. Maybe this explanation is a little clearer…

Coming soon…acrylic paint dries fast and although I did the first part (the one you have seen) using the wet on wet paint technique, for the second part I need to paint on dry.

I used to think abstract art is so random. But after attended a few abstract painting exhibition, I soon learnt to appreciate them by feeling the paintings. It’s almost like meditate or do a mindfulness practice. The paintings communicate to the viewer what the artist intended.

Yes, abstract art, to the viewer is a meditative experiment but the viewer’s experience can be…usually is…different than the artist. Thank you so much Cassa. All the best!
