Impressionism was the name, coined by Louis Leroy, an art critic, that describes an art movement mostly begun in Normandy, France but that spread throughout Europe and America. Leroy thought of it in 1874 when he saw Monet’s painting «Impression Sunrise».

Unlike you, Francis, I like impressionism. Although I’m drawn to the bold colors in your work, I also like the soft colors in most impressionistic paintings. I can’t draw or paint at all, so I admire and enjoy just about all «art.»

Your disdain for the Impressionists does not surprise me. I did like your video and it is one of my favorite periods. I saw a very fine History of Impressionism at the Bellagio in Las Vegas in the early 21st Century.

Taste is individual. Or preferences are individual. These are fine artists, and every bit as interesting as (far and away) the largest percentage of «modern, abstract, cubist, etc. Notice you seem to shy away from styles approaching «photographic» portrayal of subjects, which to the amateur Freudian analyst in me suggests conclusions. I prefer to ignore names and classifications and judge works individually for color, mood, composition, texture, and effect. Nice music. Thanks for the education.

I quite agree with your analysis. Preferences are most certainly individual. And no doubt these are fine artists, well trained and well knowledgeable of their craft, no doubt. Photography is an art form that I greatly love, I don’t like painters trying to imitate photography. Some, like Joaquin Sorolla (featured in the video), were photographers as well and worked with photographers. In his case that influence is very evident in his paintings. I like some of them, don’t get me wrong, it’s just that I see only decorative values in them and nothing else. And decorative they are all in every style, every genre…
