Expressionism or Pop Art in the Art of FBC a.k.a. Bodo Vespaciano?

I think I have said…in this blog and in many other places…that I do not seek a style, that I don’t aspire to a style and that I don’t care anything about a style when it comes to my artwork. A style is developed through repetition. You repeat something enough and you’ve a style. It is very easy to do. But what I seek is the thrill of discovery. I don’t want to stick to the same, often tried and true, methods and ideas. My reason for doing art is for the search. And every time I search I find.

My artwork reflects the ideas and philosophy of expressionism, which was one of the vanguards of the 20th Century and now has established itself quite well in Art History. Some may even confuse it a bit with Pop Art. However, I do not do Pop Art, I do align myself closer to the Expressionists. Yet, like I said, I do not focus on the particularities or the rules that guide each school of art, or each genre of art. I take a little bit here and a little bit there, of course, following the rules. Then my work becomes an amalgam of several styles and when that happens I call it Surreal-Expressionism. I usually put an abstract-like background on my compositions.

Here are a few samples, the first three from 2004 and the third one from 2018:

Yo opino que en cualquier tipo de arte lo que importa es la emoción. Cuqluier manifestación artística, desde mi punto de vista, ha despertar un sentimiento, sino a mí no me interesa. Buen día.

    1. De acuerdo Azurea, el arte, en todas sus manifestaciones, debe comunicar y llegarle al observador. A mi si una pieza no me habla no me interesa tampoco. Bon dia y un saludo.

You react through your art. I love the bold colors and the recurring themes. Jazz Art does seem to reflect your style. I sense more Caribbean and African influences than classical European, but I am not an art student.

    1. Well, I don’t look to follow the influences that exist in my country or in Europe, my idea of art is that it exists in the search. Because African art and Caribbean art is so foreign to me, it attracts my attention greatly and I find I can search within those forms and discover something I can tie to my European forms. In Europe, bright colours dominated many of the art vanguards, like expressionism and abstract art…

Maybe I’ve not learned enough but these examples are not in the same vein as JaZzArT?

    1. Somewhat related Espie, but although painted under the influence of Jazz (Charles Mingus) they tend to be more surreal-expressionism, although I don’t really like labels, but people expect it…

It was only recently that I realised that you loosely regarded your art as Surreal Expressionism, and thanks to your excellent posts about the different styles of art, I’ve become more acquainted with what these styles all mean. That said, like most non-artists, I know what I like, and I like your style a lot Francesc as you know – whatever you want to call it.

    1. I really don’t like to call it anything but art/paintings. As you know, I am not into styles at all, but since it is expected, I have to give it a name. Even in museums and galleries they ask you what style you paint in…
Thank you my friend and all the best.

I am with Malc on this one. Not sure I am educated enough to say what style or label is accurate for your work, I just know what I like and what is appealing to my eye. And your art has always met the mark.

    1. Thank you Brad, and I agree. There’s only two types of art: good and bad, and the observer decides. The decision is always personal. All the best!

I love the way you avoid trying to find a style. You can get stuck. I need to branch out more and I am really trying hard to do so. I agree with Brad, I know what I like and your work is amazing. One thing I will say is that I like the way you do an abstract background on much of your work. To me it adds more depth and movement. Like an added bonus to the work which is already moving and full of beautiful symbolism. I was always a Waterhouse fan and had many prints until I saw your work and feel in love – what can I say. Give everyone a big squeeze for me. Our love, Joni

    1. Thank you so much Joni. A style is easy to develop, all you have to do is repeat the same thing. I believe in the search. Wishing you both, and the family, all the best and many blessings. Hugs 🤗 from the South! 🌺😊♥️

De los artistas he observado y aprendido que su principal arte es la constancia, se hace camino al andar como lo dice Machado, en los años se depura una manera de expresar lo trascendente y los críticos lo nombran y de eso no se mucho . Me gusta esa muestra.

    1. De acuerdo. El camino hay que hacerlo al andar, sin duda alguna y el artista tiene que constantemente reinventarse y reivindicarse con cada obra. Muchas gracias y un saludo.

  8. I agree with the philosophy and execution of your art. I try to do the same with my novels and novellas. Beautiful paintings. Bravo.
