I remember I spent my summer holiday in New York that year…2001…and I wa thinking about applying for an internship at an art academy whose home was the top of the North Tower of the World Trade Centre. I never applied but I went back home thinking about it…
In any event, why do artists paint self-portraits? Most have, some obsessively, like some people who continuously take selfies. Self-portraits were the original selfie and I don’t like selfies and I don’t like self-portraits, of myself. I like the self-portraits that other artists have done. But the question is why? I would say that they become like measurements, like time capsules, they let you know where you’ve been as an artist and how far you have come. They also remind you of your behaviour, your moods, your psyche and how you looked at different times of your life. And yes, you can do that with a camera as well, but when you paint it you can add so many more things…
Since I never was into that, I did very few self-portraits…few portraits as well…and three of them were done somewhat around the same time. It was during 2007 that I ventured to do the first one, and the second one was in 2008. Here they are, however, do not look for physical likeness. That was not my objective. As a surreal-expressionist, my aim was to capture other aspects of myself and my thoughts.

2007 Hands down. Second 2008 a little macabre, first 2008 too plain to be Bodo. Yes, definitely 2007 – complex with a real person peering back at the audience, and certainly more of the «Jazz» we’re accustomed to.

You can search for yourself and find out unexpected nuances while you are making a self-portrait. Because of the speed, that’s impossible when you take a picture. Regards!
