Art History: The Crucified Christ in Contemporary Art

(«Crucifixion», 1941, Renato Guttuso)

The earliest depictions can be considered graffiti and is dated as far back as the year 200 A.D.

Here are some of the more contemporary depictions of the Crucifixion.

Your informative post today brought to mind the painting of the Crucifixion inside a sea cave on Davaar Island at Campbeltown, Scotland. I took advantage of the opportunity to see it when I was there. One has to be cognizant of the tides, as you walk to the island at low tide, don’t tarry, and walk back to the mainland before high tide. Campbeltown is well off the beaten path on the Kintyre Peninsula, down near Northern Ireland. But if you’re ever in the area… it’s a unique experience. Here’s a website about it: https://www.atlasobscura.com/places/davaar-island-cave-painting.

Don’t hold much admiration for most of these. To boot, found Pablo’s showing disappointing. Not a religious man, I don’t believe that affects my interpretation, yea or nay, just don’t see much of this awe-worthy, and some, Dali for example, simply and clearly attempts to shock of notoriety’s sake.

I loved the music you produced to go with this video, lovely. I appreciate the timeliness of this post also. I really loved the first piece by Renato Guttuso. I found it very captivating and I loved the use of colors. El Greco (Cristo agonizante) was my personal favorite. Also I was drawn to the last painting by Alexamenos graffito. Great post Francis. Thank you. Blessings to you all. ❤️🤗🙏

    1. That was what was called the blasphemous graffiti found circa the year 200 A.D. And I am with you, I favour El Greco’s Crucifixion painting, one of many that he did, but a great one indeed. Thank you so much Joni and love and blessings to you both!
