Art History: Dalí, cubista – Dalí, the Cubist

Dalí, the great Surrealist! The man who said «I am Surrealism». The self-proclaimed genius, also took a stab at cubism…

His cubist period was probably from 1923 to 1925 while he was a student at the Escuela de Bellas Artes de San Fernando de Madrid. His incesant search, which accompanied him throughout his life, led him to study Cubism by himself in his dorm room as there were no Cubist painters in Madrid at the time. He said his cubist influence came from Juan Gris and that painting cubist canvases opened doors for him in the more elite vanguard circles of Madrid.

In 1926 he travelled to Paris and met Pablo Picasso…

These works are well done. I am somewhat surprised that a touch of cubism is not found in any of his surrealist paintings. He seemed to have a talent for it.

    1. I think so too, he did have a talent for cubism, and it was all self-taught as there were no cubist teachers in Madrid at the time he was there in Art School. But he completely evolved into another type of painter, using what he learned (and there are some paintings he did which look just like van Gogh) and letting it become something else. That is what an artist has to do to progress, not necessarily to develop a style, a style is much overrated, what an artist needs to develop is his voice, which he manifests in what he paints/writes/dances/acts/composes et al. All the best my friend and a great week to you.

Dali has always been my favorite artist. I was thrilled when Florida built their own museum with his works!!

    1. Yes, in St. Pete. I had the chance to visit it before I left Florida. This year I will visit his Museum-Theatre in Cadaqués, and his house/museum in Port Lligat, Catalunya. And although I was not a big fan of Dalí, I have a new found admiration for his work, although I prefer him as a writer than a painter. He was a much better writer, even his wife Gala said so at one time. Thank you George and all the best to you.

«Genius» as a descriptive is bandied about so much as to be a worthless assessment. I am troubled on the one hand that we trust auto mechanics to tell us who among their peers are geniuses, at the same time I fear none but auto mechanics can understand what makes a genius in the art of auto mechanics. At times, I think I’ve seen [a cubist piece] from Dali that suggests something extraordinary, and many times I am disappointed in what Dali shows me.

I am pleased that I am learning different styles periods, and artists, but am steadfast in that I like what I like, not what someone else cares to tell me as a work of «genius,» I must adore it.

Once again, thank you, benevolent and most excellent instructor.

    1. You’re right and that’s the point of what I am trying to do, which is to present art history in most of its phases or epochs but I agree, what one likes is what one likes regardless of what anyone says. Now most art professors are stressing art that I hate, conceptual art and other such none sense so no one is going to tell me too what I should like and who I should consider genius. We’re on the same page here my friend. Thank you and I am glad you are liking the series.
