Art History: El cubismo, comenzando con Picasso – Cubism, starting with Picasso

(Picasso en la época cubista – Picasso during his Cubist times)

Well, we are now in the times when Art History really filled up with many different styles and schools of thought. These are generally referred to as the Vanguards of the XX C. One of the most important ones, that actually changed the way painters worked and thought, was Cubism.

Cubism was a way of representing the subject in a manner that had never been done before. The idea was to recreate the object on the canvas, painting it as one actually sees it, from all angles (or most). The artist changes the focus, from the one most revered in classical painting, to one mimicking African tribal masks where the features were not meant to represent reality but the idea in the artist’s mind. This, more or less, was what Picasso and Braque were thinking about when they invented this new vanguard of the XX C., Cubism.

Here are samples from Picasso. In the next post we will feature samples from Juan Gris, a painter from Madrid that also became a famous Cubist. And on the third day, we shall delve into Salvador Dalí, but not Dalí the surrealist «mad man», but Dalí the cubist.

Gracias…

Cheers…

I have always enjoyed the artist’s layering of different perspectives into a single plane that creatively represents the subject. It is one of the few styles where I truly believe I understand the concept behind the artist’s portrayal. Enjoyed the art you shared and really loved that funky smooth organ work!

Excelente video Francisco.

While I admire Picasso’s work, this is not a favorite for me. Interesting, but, «Meh.» The accompanying music though, was marvelous. Thank you for this little trip.

How do you do that with music?

      2. It’s an attempt mostly as I don’t really think it can be done because we listen to music as a whole, only in parts when they do solos, so no, no cubist music…

This was a very interesting and educational video Francis. I have never really understood this style of art so thank you. I enjoyed the pieces you showcased and also loved your catchy original music. I always enjoy your music. Although I am fascinated by the intricacies of the work it is not my favorite style. However, when anyone creates a new style of art, poetry or photography you can’t help but admire that incredible creativity and tip your hat to the originator. I also admire the guts it takes in being a nonconformist. Big hugs and my love to you both. ❤️

    1. Thank you so much Joni. You know how much I appreciate your time and your encouragement and your kind words that humble me. I am not a big fan of cubism either but it is a very important part of Art History because it opened the road for many other aspects of modern art and allowed for a philosophy of art to accompany the craft. All this while not being the most lasting of the vanguards of the 20th Century. All the best and blessings to you both.

You are very welcome. I too admire and respect those who had the daring of will to step outside the norm and embrace a philosophy to accompany the craft. This is why I am grateful for your posts which certainly helps to educate me. I know what my eyes love to look upon but being knowledgeable about the history of art is most appreciated my friend. Blessings and love to you both. 🤗❤️🦋🌸
