Art History: (Special Edition) «Virgo Lactans»

(Hera nursing Heracles)

Well, being that today is the Feast Day of the Epiphany (El día de los Reyes Magos en España), I thought I would divert from the timeline of our art history videos and bring this little known part of the history of art. This is the development and the rise of paintings called «La virgen de la leche» or the nursing Madonna. It stems from the early Egyptian religion of Isis and Horus, as well as from Greek and later Roman mythology.

Cheers…

Loved this post, Francisco. I enjoyed seeing the use of a specific iconography through history. It is unfortunate to think that art was lost to the idea of modesty over what is the most natural of all human acts. Well written and shared!

I never knew that there was such a category, but I learn something new from you almost every day Francesc. I suppose sub-consciously I would have come across paintings like this, but they wouldn’t have registered in my psyche. Even so, I’ll make a mental note for any future encounters.

    1. I don’t know if it is «officially» a category, but it certainly was an important aspect of religious art up until…about…the XVIth C. in Europe and in America and Russia, a few centuries longer. There are many aspects of Medieval and Renaissance painting…as well as more contemporary ones…that may perhaps pass by us, maybe because we don’t relate or maybe because it was distracting, but it is good to take a second look and get to know some of these more obscure paintings or trends, especially in religious art. Thank you my friend and all the best. Today is King’s Day in Spain, so later today, I will raise a glass of red and I will toast to you my friend!
      Cheers,
      Francesc
