Black and White Jazz-Art

(«Pharaoh Jazz», art digital original by Francisco Bravo Cabrera)

I would like to say that this is one of the first (done in 2001) of the Jazz-Art Series of graphite/ink drawings on Canson paper. There may be others from the same time but this one has survived. I apologise for the quality of the photograph. Actually I had a tee-shirt made with this image and that’s the only thing I have now so I stretched it and took the picture (it is now framed).

This drawing is very important to me because it has within the composition the idea, the jazzyness, i.e. the elements that later formed the series JaZzArt en València. I started with the idea of music, but music is totally abstract and I did not intend to create an abstract drawing. So I revised my thought and started sketching the idea of music, the flow of the phrases, the staccato, the legato, the syncopation, the rhythm, the voice of the singer, the swing of the players…

I think you get the rest…

If you would like to see a complete…well, almost…collection of the black & white drawings, please visit us on our Instagram, @Francisco_Bravo_Cabrera and I think you will get a complete picture and you will see how this 2001 drawing became the great grand-father to the drawings that came later.

#art, Art is Objective; Taste is Subjective – Art Philosophy by Bodo

(Bodo eating ice cream for it’s philosophical value/actor portrayal/All rights Reserved)

Art is objective, do not doubt it. Art possesses inherent qualities: form, structure, composition, skill, harmony and originality. These qualities can be judged independently of personal taste. I do not argue with taste. Individual likes and dislikes are subjective,. But the value of art is rooted in these objective elements that give it enduring power and universal resonance, and this goes way beyond the shifting opinions of art lovers.

To say “art is subjective” is making of art a non-standardised, non-professional endeavour and it is a refuge for people unwilling to face standards. Taste, for sure is subjective, and people can still have good or bad taste, and not just in their breath. Art is not like that. A painting or a symphony is not a matter of preference in the same way as choosing vanilla or chocolate. Works of art embody objective qualities: proportion, rhythm, innovation, mastery of medium, coherence of vision. These are measurable and comparable, regardless of whether one “likes” them.

To reduce art to opinion is ridiculous and to distorts the difference between genius and banality. It’s like saying Mozart’s music is equal to elevator music, or that a Rembrandt is equal to child’s doodle. The serious study of art, as an academic pursuit and as a profession, recognizes that, although taste fluctuates, the core of art does not and it endures based upon objective principles. Without them even the word art would lose its meaning.

THE ROAD

Travelling and thinking ourselves worthy of the road beneath our feet,

with voices flying through and with the winds travelling with us,

yet the road is not the dust beneath us, and winds move only sails and not the legs and feet that will undoubtedly get us there…

#art, Painting As The Paint Dries…

(Image by and property of Francisco Bravo Cabrera/All Rights Reserved)

A painting can take so long…

Thoughts guide the process, they are the weight that holds the ideas down just long enough for the brain to capture them. Once an idea creates a spark, the spark travels down via sinapsis and before you know it you are standing in front of the canvas with a brush in hand ready to create.

The process is fluid…

Have to allow room for mistakes. Mistakes allows the brain to create different alternatives, and these alternatives are the genesis of improvisation. And my art, being «JaZzArT» must have improvisation. Improvisation creates energy and movement in the composition and soon a part of the composition begins to create all by himself. This is like a brilliant saxophone solo by Stanley Turrnetine…

And then you dance…

Got to get the rhythm of the work. Without swing there’s no jazz…

Here are some new works from the Summer of 2025 in the Aegean.

#poem, «Whispers To The Great Spirit»

(Artwork by and property of Francisco Bravo Cabrera/All Rights Reserved)

Whispers to the Great Spirit

To you,
Spirit of Life, Love and Eternity,
whose breath is the freshness of the morning mist,
and whose gentle hand paints the dusk with fire,
I open my heart to hear Your song as I walk
upon the path where we’ve all walked
and we all will.

My prayer:
To see and appreciate the beauty of nature,
with eyes not blurred by judgment,
so I can see the sacredness of all things,
the stone, the river, the wing, the seed,
and that my prayer can move as I move.

My wish:
To learn to listen,
as the forests listen to the wind,
and not to speak with thunder,
but with the quiet truth of water
that shapes the mountain without anger.

My desire:
Is to gain the wisdom to be humble
and not seek to be better than my brothers,
but to stand beside them,
for we are the threads
of the robe that you have weaved
to cloak eternity.

May my hands proffer kindness to all,
and my words soothe ailing souls,
as I walk through countryside and cities,
may my steps leave only the echo of gratitude
upon Your Earth, alive and blessed.

I lift my heart to ask Your guidance,
when it is my turn to pass,
so that when the last light fades,
I may return to You,
having learned to love mankind
and the world that You have made.
