Esto es verdad…

El arte de esta donostiarra es el performance… Tiene 86 años y en 2014 recibió el Premio Velázquez de Artes Plásticas, otorgado por el Ministerio de Cultura… Esther estudió arte en París y vive en la capital francesa desde 1973. Previamente había estudiado periodismo en España… A principios de la década de los 60 se unió con el pintor José Antonio Sistiaga para formar el Taller de Libre Expresión, en 1967 se unió al grupo ZAJ (grupo musical de vanguardia creado por Juan Hidalgo en España) que había sido creado en 1966… Ferrer trabaja su arte con objetos, fotografías y sistemas basados en números primos y claro, sus performances… Aunque no soy fan de las performances ni de las instalaciones, Esther Ferrer es una artista que recoge la historia de arte en nuestro país (España) y la incluyo porque también es mujer y por eso no se le ha dado, quizá, su merecido reconocimiento. En fin, si a uno le interesa la historia del arte hay que estudiarlos y conocerlos a todos, buenos y malos, fenomenales o mediocres, estemos de acuerdo o no…

No soy dirigido, dirijo… así es lo que debe ser uno en la vida, al menos así lo pienso yo. Jamás me he dejado dirigir, ni gobernar por nadie. Cuando cumplí con la mili si, pero fue por consentimiento porque me gustaba y quería aprender todo lo más posible de lo que me podría ofrecer el ejercito, igual en la policía, pero ahora, ni de coña…

I am not led, I lead… that is how one should be in life, or at least that’s what I think. I have never let anyone lead or govern me. When I did my military service, yes, but it was by consent because I liked it and wanted to learn as much as possible from what the army could offer me; the same goes for the police, but now, no way…

SOME THOUGHTS ON ART (and life)…

I think, like many other artists, that I always tend to like the last thing I did better…

To search in art means that one must be willing to break the bonds that keep you liking what you’ve done and be willing to go beyond the comfort zone and see what is out there. It may be good or not…

Every year of growth as an artist represents abilities gained, possibly ages ago that one might not have ever used and comes time to use them…

When staring at an open, blank canvas, one cannot think of the power that can be had with the right composition. The time to plan and develop an idea is way before one even buys (or orders) the canvas. A sketch is the mother of the painting, from that (or those) sketch(s) comes the final product.

A good painting requires planning and one cannot count on «inspiration» or much less on intuitive urges or drives. To build a house one starts with the blueprints, to create a painting one starts with a few rough lines on paper…

Bueno todos, hasta los gatos lo conocemos y hoy sentimos mucho la noticia de que sufre de un linfoma cerebral que posiblemente acabe con su carrera, su larga, larguísima y fenomenal carrera.

Miguel Rafael Martos Sánchez, nació en Linares, Jaén, hace 81 años y hasta hace apenas diez días estaba agraciando los escenarios de los grandes teatros del mundo, pero ahora tendrá que descansar y recuperarse.

Hoy dedico esta sección a este andaluz que nos ha entretenido y nos ha traído tanta música, inmemorables canciones y esa chispa, ese duende, esa alegría del sur por tantos, tantos años. Dios lo cuide y lo recupere para que vuelva otra vez a deleitarnos.

Para aquellos que quizá no lo sepan, Raphael lleva 60 años de carrera y ha vendido mas de 70 millones de discos en 7 idiomas. En 1960 ganó el Festival de Benidorm, y representó varias veces a España en Eurovision. En 1969 cantó en Madison Square Garden (Nueva York) cantando delante de más de 48 mil personas. Ha hecho películas y teatro, ¿Qué más se puede decir? Pues yo no digo más que aquí os dejo lo mejor de su repertorio.

I am almost positive that you do not know this artist. So I will tell you a bit about her, but I do encourage you to look further on, especially if you are interested in women artists and in abstract art. Suzy Frelinghuysen was an artist and an opera singer born in Newark, New Jersey (US) in 1911.

Suzy’s father was the president of the Mutual Benefit Life Insurance Co. of New Jersey. Her grandfather, Frederick T. Frelinghuysen was Secretary of State under US President Chester A. Arthur), and her great-great-uncle, Theodore Frelinghuysen had been a senator from New Jersey.

Although Suzy studied voice, she always displayed an interest in painting. Her training in art was mainly through tutors in New Jersey and in her many and frequent trips to Europe. Then in 1935 she got married to North American artist, and advocate for American abstract art, George L.K. Morris. He was a great influence upon her career as an artist. Their home, and studios, in Lenox, Massachusetts has been converted into a museum.

Morris introduced her to the work of European artists like Picasso, Léger, Braque, and Juan Gris. This led her to the search which yielded work that leaned towards an abstract Cubist manner. She joined the American Abstract Artists (AAA/1937). Then in 1938 Suzy became the first woman to have a painting placed in the permanent collection of A.E. Gallatin’s Museum of Living Art. She also took part at the Salon des Réalités Nouvelles, in Paris, and exhibited also in Rome and Amsterdam. And in 1943, her artwork was included in Peggy Guggenheim’s show Exhibition by 31 Women at the Art of This Century gallery in New York.

From 1947 to 1950 Suzy sang at the New York City Opera and the New Orleans Opera. Bronchitis made her stop and in 1951 she returned to being a full-time painter.

Frelinghuysen died of a stroke at the age of 76 in Massachusetts. Her paintings hang at the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA), the Philadelphia Museum of Art, the Smithsonian American Art Museum, the Carnegie Art Institute, as well as in her home and studio museum in Lenox, Massachusetts.

EL FUEGO

Del sur nos absorben los vientos huracanados
que desguazan las velas de los bares,
y lo único lindo que nos dejan
es que ahora podemos ver las nubes bailar al compas de su silbido…

Mientras que el fuego,
devorador de sueños,
zigzaguea por los bosques,
sorteando as junglas,
despeinando las dehesas,
culminando en las aceras sucias,
que ni el acido muriático ha logrado desinfectar,
para que sus llamas resplandezcan,
y se engrandezcan,
tomando forma humana…
