#art, Kiki Smith in the Women’s Artist Series

(Photo Britannica)

Well I must say I did not know anything about her, but we are learning together so, here it is. She is from the US and associated with feminism and art seems to focus on sex, birth and regeneration. She was born in Nuremberg, Germany in 1954 but her family moved to the US in 1955, so she has lived all her life in that country… She lives and works in Manhattan’s Lower East Side… She studied at the Hartford Art School (1974/75)… She moved to NYC and in 1976 joined Collaborative Projects (Colab) an artists group of artists of various disciplines… As of 1988 Kiki began her study of mortality and of the physical human body. Her work is an exploration of human organs, with sculptures of the heart, lungs, stomach, liver and spleen. She also explored bodily fluids with social significance, especially those that were causal factors for diseases such as AIDS, like blood, and women’s rights issues which included urine, menstrual blood, and feces… Smith has created film, sculptures, artists books, tapestries and mosaics… Secretary of State Hillary Clinton awarded Smith the Medal of Arts (2012). Her paintings hang in US consulates in Istanbul and Mumbai.

I hope you enjoy a few of her works…

#art, Ken Currie… (Esp/Eng)

(Ken Currie/foto/photo Flowers Gallery)

¡Venga! ¿Conocías a Ken Currie? ¿ No?

Are you ready to meet a truly dark painter? Did you know about Ken Currie? No? I figured as much, but it’s okay, I’m going to introduce him to you…

Ken Currie, a Scottish painter, was born in England in 1960, but he studied and lived in Glasgow, which is why he is considered Scottish. His paintings are dark and violent.

He studied at the Glasgow School of Art, graduating in 1983. He was part of the «New Glasgow Boys,» a group of young figurative painters from the city. Among others, the group included Peter Howson, Adrian Wiszniewski, and Steven Campbell, all famous Scottish painters.

Currie’s paintings explore, with some depth, the theme of mortality and his great interest in everything related to the human body, both physical and metaphorical. He referred to mortality as «the terror,». In a 2021 interview with the British magazine Tatler Asia, the painter stated that he enjoys having his paintings float in that liminal space between the beautiful and the horrific. He has also mentioned that he likes to represent things that emerge from the darkness as they acquire a theatrical touch.

We know that Currie idolizes the British painter Francis Bacon and also adores the great Sevillian painter Diego Velázquez, two painters whom I certainly admire as well, although not to the point of idolizing them…

#music, Great American Bands, Ch. 20: Sly and the Family Stone!

(Sly and the Family Stone/photo by unknown author)

The one and only original «funk» band in rock history and the one that opened the «funky door» to all the others. Created by the smashing genius Sly Stone! And they top off the VALENCIARTIST’S top 20 Great American Bands!

Sly and the Family Stone was formed in San Francisco by Sylvester Stewart (Sly Stone), a composer, multi-instrumentalist, singer and producer in 1967… Not only were Sly and the Family Stone a fundamental band for funk, but because they were able to open up into other genres like rock, psychedelic, soul and rhythm and blues they became one of the most important groups in the history of popular music. And they were the first multirracial band whose members were men and women as well.

(Photo from YouTube/Unknown photographer)

The band’s golden years were 7, from 1967 to 1975. During this time they released seven albums. The second era of the band was from1975 to 1983, with four albums and featuring Sly Stone exclusively. They other members were replaced as needed… In 2010 they ranked 43 in Rolling Stone’s magazine list of the 100 greatest artist. Three of their albums are also listed in Rolling Stone’s magazine best 500 albums of all time. In 1993 they were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

(Psychedelic soul group ‘Sly & Family Stone’ make a human dancing train; (L-R) Sly Stone, Cynthia Robinson, Freddie Stone, Rosie Stone, Jerry Martini, Larry Graham in circa 1970./photo Rolling Stone)

in 1968 «Everyday People» was released and became their first number one hit… This was a great start for the release of their first album Stand! which sold three million copies (one was mine). The band reached instant fame, with an irresistible image, a group with men women, white and black singing of peace, love, tolerance and all the good things of the existing «hippie» culture and aesthetics. And their music, a blend of funk, soul, rock with influences of R & B, jazz, blues, and pop, and brought to you through a psychedelic prism that rocked the age… Sly and the Family Stone was one of Woodstock’s (1969) greatest acts…

A most worthy Great American Band to close VALENCIARTIST’S Top 20. What do you think?
