DEACON 11: The Labourer

(«Ora et labora» by Francisco Bravo Cabrera/All Rights Reserved)

Laborare est orare” and/or “ora et labora” are Latin phrases usually associated with the Rule of Saint Benedict. It is a way for monks to pray and to do manual labour. To labour, to work, is an essential duty of all men. I would say that no man can demand anything if that man has not performed his daily labour.

The worker deserves his wages. Jesus expressed this and Saint Paul as well as it is written in the New Testament of the Holy Bible. In St. Luke chapter 10, we find that Jesus has sent out many to preach the Kingdom of God and he said to them: “The harvest is abundant but the labourers are few; so ask the master of the harvest to send out labourers for his harvest…I am sending you like lambs among wolves…Into whatever house you enter, first say, ‘Peace to this household…Stay in the same house and eat and drink what is offered to you, for the labourer deserves his payment.”

The Prophet Mohamed also praised work and spoke of the compensation due to workers. This is what he had to say: “You should pay the labourer his wages before his sweat dries” (Sunan Ibn Mâjah (2443). This makes it quite clear that he was advocating for wages to be paid on time and promptly to those who labour. Mohamed also said that one of the praiseworthy acts of worship was getting one’s sustenance from one’s work.

In Buddhism, the main ethical guidelines include the very clear, and precise statement that whatever work one engages in should be helpful to others and never harmful and that one must do one’s job well as to reap the fruits of one’s labour. One is not to overspend, or hoard and one should avoid debt.

The Torah also addresses the labour issue: “The wages of a labourer shall not remain with you until morning…you must pay him his wages on the same day before the sun sets (Lev. 19:13) and Deuteronomy 24:15 states that “When you enter your neighbour’s vineyard, you may, if you desire, eat your fill of the grapes…when you find yourself amid your neighbour’s standing grain, you may pluck ears with your hand.”

I wanted to emphasise and re-emphasise the point that the rights…and duties…of labourers, and we all are labourers, have been firmly established in the religious texts of the major religions of the world. The protection of those who labour, and as I said we all have to fall into that labour pool, has always been of utmost importance. To labour is to pray, and to pray and worship, as Mohamed said, one must first labour. It is imperative.

To gain the rights afforded in the magna carta (constitution) that governs every democratic nation on earth, one must have laboured. And the labourer deserves his pay. And health insurance, a fair wage, rights, and opportunities for advancement. A labours should be able to afford and own his home, his vehicle, vacations, and a well lived life. His children should be afforded elementary and higher education as well.

We work for the progress of the state but the state must work to allow workers to progress as well. There is no state without its workers and workers deserve all the benefits the state can offer. And no one in the state should be classified as anything other than a worker.

#art, FEATURES by VALENCIARTIST: Fabian Fiasco

(Fabian Fiasco/photo provided by Fabian Fiasco/All Rights Reserved)

I think you will truly enjoy this article/interview by this magnificent artist from The Netherlands, who goes by the name of Fabian Fiasco. I am sure many of you know him from our blogosphere. You can find his site here.

FIASCO IN HIS OWN WORDS

VALENCIARTIST: What makes an artist? And, naturally, what makes you an artist?

FF: That is not easy to answer, as far as I am concerned many answers are possible. Creative people who make things, such as writers, painters, actors, sculptors, but also craftsmen and architects and so on.

Before I really focused on painting, I was a mason for almost my entire working life, working on beautiful houses. And when beautifully designed buildings or homes are built, as a mason I also thought that was a kind of art.

And what makes me an artist is that I don’t actually say I am an artist, but the people here in this beautiful village call me an artist. They did that from the very beginning when I opened a studio here and they saw my painting work. There are millions of people who make so much better and more beautiful work than I do, and I really say with amazement, wow, they are real artists.
My paintings are not really meant to hang above your bed or in the living room, because who wants me life-size naked on a chair above their bed?
But maybe being an artist is just a kind of lifestyle that has been romanticized in history and stories. In that respect, I live life as an artist, with a difficult character included.

Maybe I like to play the artist.

VALENCIARTIST: Should artists engage in social/political activities, or speak out against injustices, real or perceived? Is an artist a good representative of the «people» to be able to give opinions (at times controversial), proffer ideas or criticise government plans, laws, procedures or ideological philosophies?

FF: On the one hand I think so, but on the other hand I think that when I hear all those actors on the news or talk shows telling me who I should vote for or what is good for my health. Then, I think “shut the fuck up” and stick to your work and just entertain me.

And I think you should always speak out against injustice, real or perceived. However, this is also difficult to define, because everyone has different beliefs behind it. But I do think that there is some kind of natural morality that justifies that. I also sometimes think, get up and stop acting like a child, because nowadays you will hurt someone’s feelings if I farted yesterday.

Is an artist a good representative of the ‘people’ to be able to express (sometimes controversial) opinions, put forward ideas or criticize government plans, laws, procedures or ideological philosophies? Pffff that’s a tough one. Musicians make protest songs about wars and governments and/or companies. Philosophers and writers think and write about everything in and around what happens in society and life. It is difficult to give controversial opinions, because many opinions and ideas are often created through other means, for example propaganda or indoctrination through various institutions and institutions. And laws, we can spend a very long and different interview on that, because that and everything about politics interests me very much.

I’m arrogant enough to think that I’m convinced that almost no one is really aware of what really goes on behind closed doors. Something I have looked into all of it, and I have studied many new laws in many countries, which really made me scratch my head and think why did they do that? Now in the times we live in nowadays, if you are critical, and it doesn’t matter whether you are an artist or an ordinary citizen, if you are critical, and it goes against the so-called established order, then you are dismissed as the most terrible person there is. Yet I think it is very important to be and remain critical.

But I think talking about politics is not easy, because I don’t think most people really understand how and what is going on. I do hope that they slowly wake up to all the corruption that is slowly coming out. But will it change anything?
And sometimes I just need to “ shut the fuck up’’

VALENCIARTIST: Can you give me a top 3 of your most important artists (any type of art) and the reason?

FF: Another difficult question, can I really only mention 3? Okay.
The first is a master forger from the Netherlands Henricus Antonius (Han) van Meegeren. And why, because he painted many old masters and sold them to the Germans during the Second World War. And after the war he painted an old master in real time in court because they did not believe him. can be seen in a documentary or on the internet. Very interesting.

The second is a master forger from Germany. Wolfgang Beltracchi. And why, because he has made work by many highly regarded artists, who had been described in catalogues but had never been seen. So he came up with those new works painted in those artists’ styles, and I think that’s also genius. Can also be found on the internet in a documentary, and interesting to see.

And the third is of course me, and why? Because I have had a wild and exciting life full of interesting stories, I make art. And have a difficult character, who is full of shit.

Take Five…

(Francisco, actor portrayal)

If there were a biography about you, what would the title be?

The title would be “Take Five”, it was suggested as my theme song as well by my friend and fellow blogger CB… and I kind of like it…

#poem, «Hours»

(Image by and property of Francisco Bravo Cabrera/All Rights Reserved)

Hours filled with thoughts roll before me…
I’m dreaming of travelling north,
as I watch silver trains roll on by me,
floating like ghostly silver smoke.
But this stale, clingy south surrounds me like flowers,
that brighten my eyes as I dance,
trying to provoke me to stay and to keep me.
So I sit in the street where my hope is my chance.
I sit and I think, and I dream,
and I find myself floating in the smoke
and running through wind,
and my thoughts roll before me,
and the hours fill my mind…

#poem, «Love to Give You»

(«Milky Way» by Francisco Bravo Cabrera/All Rights Reserved)

I’ve eternal love to give you

You’ve made me a wonderful home,
to enjoy,
relax,
find peace
and laugh.
Don’t hold back.
No restrictions are applied.
Take hold,
realise the truth at last,
that is that nothing changes but the past…

I’ve eternal love to give you…

You’re mind is growing,
left to right and in all directions.
Your spirit fills places where the dust of years had settled.
But now that you are here darkened places shine with your light.
You don’t have to fear,
you don’t have to apologise or feel shame,
others look for the same,
and some may find themselves be like you,
and me,
free…

I’ve eternal love to give you…

The waters that once covered the Earth may one day cover the Moon.
And Noah will sail his Ark through the Milky Way.
But probably not.
Nothing can change the course of history.
Because even if the mountains change locations
you will always remain within my embrace.

I’ve eternal love to give you…

“The Blue Beetle”… Thoughts on Thinking and Life…

(Photo by and property of Francisco Bravo Cabrera/All Rights Reserved)

I stood on the beach in front of the Aegean Sea and since it was such a peaceful day I started to think…

I once saw a blue VW Beetle roll down a mountain road in Guatemala. The driver lost control and the car tumbled down towards where I stood looking…

And I wondered if my thoughts had been created or spontaneous manifestations of images turned into words…

Then I decided I was thinking too much so I got up and started painting…
