Great British Bands, Chapter 2: Depeche Mode

(Public Domain/Distributed by Sire Records)

Got to say that I always loved this band. I really got into the techno pop of the 80’s and 90’s and I had many favourite bands, but Depeche Mode was usually on top of the list… Depeche Mode was formed in 1980 by Vince Clarke, Andrew Fletcher, Martin Gore and David Gahan. In 1981 Clarke left the group and Alan Wilder came in and stayed until 1995. Gahan, Gore and Fletcher kept the group going as a trio until Fletcher’s death in 2022. Now Gahan and Gore act as a duo. The band hails from Essex, England and they are the for sure fathers of «electronic rock».

«Dreaming of Me» was the band’s first single released in 1981. It reached number 57 in the UK lists, and was the first single before the release of their first LP Speak & Spell (1981). «New Life» came later and reached number 11 in the UK and a few months later they released «Just Can’t Get Enough» and this one reached the top 10, reaching number 8.

One of my faves from the group is «Personal Jesus» from 1989 as well as «Policy of Truth«, both from the album Violator, a phenomenal album. According to Q Magazine Depeche Mode is «The most popular electronic-rock band the world has ever known», and the Sunday Telegraph said they were «one of the greatest British groups of all times». I don’t disagree that they were (up to 1989/90) one of the best techno pop, electronic-rock groups but to be among the best British groups of all times, that is another story. As far as I am concerned when they switched over to a grunge sound I kind of lost interest. But the album Violator is a jewel.

Hope you like them and tell me what you think…

#poem, «To Give Kindness» (An Euro-Ku)

(Drawing by and property of Francisco Bravo Cabrera/All Rights Reserved)

To forgive is the great pleasure that you can give to the soul, that enriches well your spirit, that can save you from a cold and angry heart…

And if you mix it with humility and love, you will find kindness is a way of life, and you will brighten with your smile the long hours of a workingman as you walk with him a mile in his own shoes, so that you’re sure to understand what he goes through…

To give kindness is a blessing, it’s deliverance from the negatives of life, and it’s the peace that you’ve been dreaming of that will free you from its stress and strain and strife.

NOTA BENE

For those who may not know, I invented the Euro-Ku (and the Ameri-Ku) in February of 2022. The style is now three years old and Ameri-Ku’s and Euro-Ku’s have been published several times in international publications.

Why do these styles exist? Well, I have always been a fan of the Japanese Japanese Haiku, but not being Japanese, not being from that part of the world, and not having experienced its history, culture or language, I did not feel I was qualified to write a Haiku in the traditional Japanese manner. So I decided to honour the style by creating the Euro-Ku and the Ameri-Ku so that I, along with others from the Western World, could engage in such a beautiful poetic form in ways that will suite our language, our history and our culture.

Both these new forms or styles will remain faithful to the three lines of the traditional Japanese Haiku, but not to the syllabic count requirement. That rule of the 5, 7, 5 syllables applies to Haikus written in the Japanese language, but it does not suite our languages in the same manner. So the Euro and Ameri-Ku have no syllabic limitations. The lines, or verses must flow continuously into each other in a logical fashion, as per our manner of speech and expression, and must not drift away into outer space. The only other requirement is that the poem be accompanied with an original, and un-edited illustration belonging to the author.

I invite you all to try it as I think you will enjoy writing them. If you are from the American continent, go for an Ameri-Ku, in English, Spanish or French, and if you are European, try the Euro-Ku in your own language…

#travel, A Little Bit of Key West, Florida

(Foto/Photo propiedad de OCS Valencia/Derechos Reservados/property of OCS Valencia/All Rights Reserved)

Key West is about 152 miles from where I used to live (Miami Beach, Florida). To get there, well, it takes for ever. You have to drive south, from Miami, which is the cul-de-sac at the end of the North American part of the American continent, and then out into the Atlantic Ocean.

And how do you do that? Well, they first built a railroad that went from little island to little island until if finished in the larger island of Key West. They later built the motor traffic highway, U.S. 1. This road actually crosses the eastern part of the entire United States… Anyways, it is a slow road and you better stick to the speed limit, which is 40 (mph) in many places as the road, like the railroad crosses through all the islands, the ones called the Florida Keys.

The US took control in 1821 of the island from the British who had taken control from the Spanish in 1763. Since then, Key West has been home to the folks that call themselves «Conchs». It’s a charming little city that resembles nothing north of it. And on Duval Street one can have a smashing good time any day and night…

If I were living in Florida today I would certainly be thinking about perhaps relocating or spending a lot more time in this little island in the middle where the Gulf of Mexico meets the Atlantic Ocean…

The drink of choice down in the Keys is the «Hurricane» and there are many bars where one can enjoy great libations, including Jimmy Buffet’s Margaritaville. But I prefer the ones whose floor is the sand…

One other thing, Key West is only 99 nautical miles away from Mariel, Cuba. During the years Cuba was a Republic, there was a ferry that transported passengers and cars from Havana to Miami via the Key West ferry. Pretty cool I would say. Of course that ended when Cuba’s government was usurped by the communists.

If you ever travel to Florida, do not miss a drive to Key West. Of course you could also fly there, but driving through all the Florida Keys is a fun and different way to get to a phenomenal destination. I still have friends there and maybe…

And I sit and wait for the sunrise sipping on a margarita with «Conchs» from Key West, while pelicans look on…

#poem, «A Song to Life»

(Artwork by Francisco Bravo Cabrera/All Rights Reserved)

A SONG TO LIFE

Some say there is no God,
And that morality has nothing to do with saintliness,
with faith, or with the rules of a superior deity.
Some say that one can love
without God’s influence and guiding light…

Some say that there is light because the sun provides it,
and believe that peace on earth can be reached
through man’s ability to negotiate,
and that only man can find the road to peace…

They say justice is handed out by man’s ability to be fair,
impartial and honest,
they need no divine inspiration.
They say that there is beauty,
but it’s just nature.
They say we are not created,
but merely the result of evolution
and that we came from a one celled organism…

They may be right…

But I do not subscribe to their precepts.
I believe there are many things on this earth
that resemble Him who created Heaven and Earth.
He who fears nothing,
He who rejects those filled with pride…
He who rules with compassion.

There is no love if the one who is Love
had not put love in our hearts.
There is no morality without the knowledge of right and wrong
as He has taught us.

There is no justice without love…
There is no peace without justice…
There is no life without God.
There are no atheists.
They know there is a God
and that’s who they deny…

Life has not evolved, life was willed by Him
who ordered it to exist.
I sing a song to life because I am thankful…
I sing a song to life because it is a song of praise…
I sing a song to life because I know who has given it to me…
