#art, #dance, #music, ¿Sabias que habían hecho un ballet de Frida Kahlo? – Did You Know They Made a Ballet About Frida Kahlo?

(English National Ballet)

If you didn’t know, I’m going to tell you… Well, in 2020, choreographer Annabelle López Ochoa created the ballet Frida for the Dutch National Ballet. The acclaimed dance magazine Dance Europe nominated it for the best world premiere award, and in 2023 the Dutch National Ballet presented it in Los Angeles. The music for this opus has been composed by Peter Salem, composer of the music for other ballets such as A Streetcar Named Desire. Frida turns out to be a great explosion of movement and music… like any ballet… but with great color, artistically associated with the Mexican painter they are trying to remember. I haven’t seen it, but since it deals with someone related to the art world and has music, I have decided to include it in today’s entries, Thursday, music day. I imagine that this Halloween there will be more Frida costumes than last year’s…

#poem, «To Give Kindness» (An Euro-Ku)

(Photograph by and property of Francisco Bravo Cabrera/All Rights Reserved)

To forgive is the great pleasure that you can give to the soul, that enriches well your spirit, that can save you from a cold and angry heart…

And if you mix it with humility and love, you will find kindness is a way of life, and you will brighten with your smile the long hours of a workingman as you walk with him a mile in his own shoes, so that you’re sure to understand what he goes through…

To give kindness is a blessing, it’s deliverance from the negatives of life, and it’s the peace that you’ve been dreaming of that will free you from its stress and strain and strife.

NOTA BENE

For those who may not know, I invented the Euro-Ku (and the Ameri-Ku) in February of 2022. The style is now three years old and Ameri-Ku’s and Euro-Ku’s have been published several times in international publications.

Why do these styles exist? Well, I have always been a fan of the Japanese Japanese Haiku, but not being Japanese, not being from that part of the world, and not having experienced its history, culture or language, I did not feel I was qualified to write a Haiku in the traditional Japanese manner. So I decided to honour the style by creating the Euro-Ku and the Ameri-Ku so that I, along with others from the Western World, could engage in such a beautiful poetic form in ways that will suite our language, our history and our culture.

Both these new forms or styles will remain faithful to the three lines of the traditional Japanese Haiku, but not to the syllabic count requirement. That rule of the 5, 7, 5 syllables applies to Haikus written in the Japanese language, but it does not suite our languages in the same manner. So the Euro and Ameri-Ku have no syllabic limitations. The lines, or verses must flow continuously into each other in a logical fashion, as per our manner of speech and expression, and must not drift away into outer space. The only other requirement is that the poem be accompanied with an original, and un-edited illustration belonging to the author.

I invite you all to try it as I think you will enjoy writing them. If you are from the American continent, go for an Ameri-Ku, in English, Spanish or French, and if you are European, try the Euro-Ku in your own language…

#art, #photography, Eugène Atget

(MoMA)

You could say he photographed the Paris of his day, (the end of the 19th and the beginning of the 20th Century), the architecture, the streets, the street scenes and then was completely forgotten… Eugène was born one February 12, 1857 en Libourne, France… In 1878 he moved to Paris to study Theatre, but he was inducted into the Army and was expulsed from the school. However he did become an actor and joined an itinerant group where he met the woman who would be his partner… After suffering an infection in his vocal chords he stopped acting and in 1887 moved to the provinces to try his hand at painting. He did not succeed. Then in 1888 he began to take photographs. His first ones, dating from 1888, are from Amiens and Beauvais… In 1890 Atget returned to Paris, now as a professional photographer. By 1898 the Museum Carnavalet and the Bibliothèque Historique de la ville de Paris were purchasing his photographs. He was commissioned to photograph, systematically, the historic buildings of Paris. In 1899 he relocated to Montparnasse… Berenice Abbott, who at the time was working with Man Ray, visited Atget (1925) and bought some of his photographs. Although she tried to promote his work, Atget fell into obscurity. Abbott sold her collection of Atget photographs to the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in 1968… In 1927, looking slightly bent, sad, distant yet attractive, Atget died on the 4th of August.

Atget died in poverty and alone. He was re-discovered in France in the 1980’s. The Bibliothèque National de Paris held a retrospective of his workin 2007. In 2019 eleven of his photographs were exhibited within a Berenice Abbott exhibition produced by the Fundación Mapfre in their exhibition halls in Madrid and Barcelona.

DEACON 11: «Genders»

(«They» Francisco Bravo Cabrera/All Rights Reserved)

I was wondering about this one. It is a complicated issue. First we start out with a quote from Genesis 1:26-27: «God created Adam in His image, in the image of God He created him; male and female God created them«. But the male and female part is a trifle confusing. It can be interpreted as a way of including any gender that goes from male to female and inclusive of both, or just two genders: male and female.

However, Jewish rabbinical literature recognises six different genders, to include the tumtum who is a person born with ambiguous gender and/or sex and the androgynous as being persons characterized with elements of both sexes.

Interestingly the rabbis recognised these genders only as biological and not culturally conditioned as we think about genders now. In the teaching of many rabbinical scholars one can find references to God having created the first human as an androgynous being possessing two faces and two sexes. Psalm 139:5 says: “You have formed me behind and before, and laid Your hand upon me.

But the human psyche is a delicate thing and we, as a caring and kind-hearted society must ensure that all persons, regardless of how they see themselves, are afforded the opportunity to live a life that is fulfilling and happy. Rules and impositions based upon beliefs should not limit the individual’s desire for growth and for development in the way they desire and in the way that brings the individual peace, tranquillity and freedom.

The person’s gender is not the issue, the heart is. Acceptance is the way towards peace. Tolerance is the way towards understanding each other. Justice is the way towards the future, a future where everyone can feel a participant. We all are children of God (whether some know it or recognise it or not) and we all seek peace in our lives.

The imposition of a binary system by a government is a crime against humanity. It can create traumas in people. It is cruel and unusual and must not be condoned, neither from the point of view of ethics (morality) or religion. God is not a limited being that only accepts two sexes. God is limitless and big enough to accept all.

#art, COLOURS (part 2)

(«Abstrakt #11» Francisco Bravo Cabrera/All Rights Reserved/Derechos Reservados)

La abstracción se basa en muchas cosas pero la más importante es el color y por eso aclaro que el color es la parte principal de mi trabajo pictórico, bien sea en obras abstractas como en las figurativas.

Abstract art bases itself on many things but colour is the most important one. Therefore I can safely say that colour is the principal ingredient within my art work, be it in abstract art or in figurative art.
