#art, Art History in One Minute, part 5: Remedios Varo

(Image source: Periódico El Mundo online/Unknown photographer)

And a warm welcome to Part 5 of «History of Art in One Minute (videos)». In this episode we go back to the 20th Century. And I am so happy to introduce to you Remedios Varo, one of my favourite painters of all time… Remedios, a Spanish painter born in Catalunya, and, contrary to the opinion of many «experts» (good grief experts!), I do not believe she was a «surrealist», per se. Her work reflected more of her knowledge of literature and her paintings are filled with fantasy and imbued with much symbolism… Well you will see it and more on the video.

#art, The Search for Abstract at OCS Valencia

(Image property of Francisco Bravo Cabrera/All Rights Reserved)

Art is the search, but one must find; otherwise, there is no art. Lately, I have been searching to create abstract art. In fact, abstract art has been the most successful artistic vanguard of the 20th century. Cubism barely exists anymore, and the other «isms» from those times are hardly remembered, but abstract art continues to be in vogue…

And just to clarify things. An artwork is called abstract, say a painting, or a drawing, when it has no recognizable features from normal life. It is made entirely of lines, angles, circles, and colours. There are paintings that may resemble this, as they can have many abstract aspects, but if they contain any figures or something similar, they are figurative, no matter how surrealistic or distorted they may be. I know this is a source of confusion as I have read many times, that Picasso was an abstract painter. Picasso never painted an abstract painting in his long, and very productive, life

#poem, «Wisdom»

(«Vela»/Francisco Bravo Cabrera/All Rights Reserved)

WISDOM

Wisdom…
Flowing through eternal dreams
before the first stone was laid down,
before the newborn’s primal scream,
before the seed took root,
before the clouds caressed the tops of mountains
or the waters flowed as rivers through the land.

Before the sky was blue,
when the seas knew no limits,
in the days before the dust of stars
traversed the vastness of space,
or the shadows of the mountains
covered valleys filled with sand,
wisdom found her rightful place,
wisdom found a place to hide,
to linger lazily and quiet
deep inside the mind of man.

#art, Art History in One Minute, part 4: Caravaggio

(Saint Catherine of Alexandria (1595-1596). Thyssen-Bornemisza Museum, Madrid/Public Domain)

Welcome to part 4 of this mini-series «Art History in One Minute (videos)» created right here at Omnia Caelum Studios Valencia. We will explore, in minimalist fashion, but providing enough information, ten artists from different times in Art History…

CARAVAGGIO

Truly the enfant terrible of the Baroque, but a most important painter in Art History. His influence was felt throughout the coming years especially among some of the great masters like Peter Paul Rubens, Bernini and Rembrandt, and probably many others.

I think you will like and enjoy this edition of «Art History in One Minute (videos)». These are the artists that shaped either the «good» or the «bad» in the history of art.

Art History: (A break in the chain) Contemporary Spanish Artist Miquel Barceló

I thought it would be nice to take a break from the old and begin to introduce some of the new. I chose Barceló because I do admire his work and I think that in it one can see the influences that the study of art history and of the masters can bring to modern art.

Gracias…

Cheers…

POEM: «A Little bit of You»

(Photo by FBC, property of Omnia Caelum Studios Valencia, C.2021, All Rights Reserved)

A little bit of you…

a piece of me.

Sweat breaks off our skin and we sprinkle the floor with the gin we drank in better days when we thought we were truly free.

No, it wasn’t honey, we toasted with bile and not champagne, no honey moon with us remained.

And it wasn’t freedom.

Shackled hands and shackled feet to the altar we were led by a glorious man of many wars a sailor tried and true, with voices pouring from his head that made us dream of youth…

A hefty chunk of you,

and a bit more of me,

leads us to days when we suffer dearly and crave to live one more second of laughter or a minute of tears.

Because if from you and from me there exists only shadows,

from me and from you there is nothing.

Poem: “To Make a Way For Love” (Euro-Ku)

(Image by and property of FBC. Omnia Caelum Studios València. All Rights Reserved)

To teach that man is not to ask for service but to give,

and through serving your brother you’ll always succeed,

strength came into this world with words of peace, to make a way for love who all can reach.
