This Italian-Argentine artist, painter, educator, and researcher seems to me to be a very interesting artist, and also one of those who, more or less, has gone unnoticed in the history of art. At least for me, at uni, she was never mentioned. Well, she was born in Asti in 1930 and died in Buenos Aires in 2023… Her work, I would say, is very interesting and is filled with her internal vision and esotericism.
Her family emigrated to Argentina when she was young. In Buenos Aires she studied, first Biochemistry and then opted for the fine arts. She moved to Caracas (1960) with experimental musician Luis Zubillaga, who was then her partner, and they immersed themselves in the vivrant sub-culture growing and developing during the 1960’s world-wide. They engaged in spiritual, esoteric, and philosophical explorations. Later, she turned to psychoanalysis. During that time, while living in Venezuela, she was completely immersed in the cultural world of Caracas. She was also part of the artistic-literary group El Techo de la Ballena.
Elda Cerrato was awarded multiple times throughout her artistic life, and her work has been exhibited in major museums and galleries. I believe you will be interested in her work, as she is an artist who has undoubtedly contributed to the history of art, not only of Argentina and South America but of the whole world. Elda Cerrato was awarded the Premio Velázquez de Artes Plásticas in 2022.
