I have to say that if you are into art, meaning if you are a collector, a student or simply someone that likes to go to museums and admire the art collections, then you have to really get to know Lucian Freud. This artist, grandson of Sigmund Freud, is considered by many, including myself, as one of the greatest portrait painters in the history of art. His work is technically sound, expertly crafted and psychological in insight. This latter aspect might just be the influence of his grandfather, the creator of psychoanalysis…
Cheers…
Very interesting. Not at all what I expected.

Thank you Espie, but did you like the portraits?

Like? In a Van Gogh-ish way. Which to my thinking crafts portraiture grossly, without pretext almost Pollock-ian. «Grossly» meaning, roughly without clearly defined lines, no intimation of ugly or base intended.

I like his work, Francisco. Not as polished an image as some artists, but there is an underlying psychological timbre that is inescapable. The fact that his subjects are captured in moments where the mind would wander may have something to do with it. Be well, my friend!

Yes, that was his specialty, and if you look further into his earlier work you will see the polished and well crafted style that he so well learned. Thank you so much dear friend!

What a facinating post. I have never heard of Lucian Freud before and appreciate the education. It was especially interesting that he believed the true animal (savage) of men and animals was only evident during sleep or rest. He has an especially lovely face even in this 2006 photograph. I loved the portrait of the queen, the Girl With The Closed Eyes, and the painting of his mother resting. By the way the music was particularly lovely and I really enjoyed the ending of the composition. Thank you Francis!

Yes, the portrait of Queen Elizabeth II of England is a great portrait, so are the others you mentioned. He was a brilliant artist and one from whom I have learned plenty. Thank you so much Joni. Lots of love and health, peace and well-being to you both!

Thank you Francis, I liked everything he did. I truly enjoyed the post. Just to let you know I am not receiving any comments from anyone. I am on line with wordpress right now trying to find out what is going on. I would never ignore a comment from someone. I looked this comment up because you always respond. So sorry about this. I am trying to get this fixed. Sending our love to you and your family

You’re very welcome Joni. I am glad you liked Lucian Freud, he is one of my favourites. I am sorry to hear you are having problems with your wordpress site and the comments. I know you never ignore anyone. Take good care and enjoy the day. It is a beautiful day here in South Florida, bright and sunny and not too hot (for the area). Big hugs to you both!

Cromwell would have loved his warts and all style.

He painted what he saw, raw likenesses

That is why Oliver Cromwell would have liked him. Allegedly he dislike the vanity of idealizing royalty or other nobility so that the portrait barely resembled the person.
