#poem, «The East River» (Euro-Ku)

THE EAST RIVER

(Euro-Ku)

I’ll write my song to the tempo of the river that flows, that will lend me words that I’ll make rhyme, while travelling through time, and trying to be alone, I’ll find my way back home…

And while I dream I’ll walk upon the footsteps that have lost all hope, among the rootless trees that dangle in the breeze, and trying not to run, I’ll stumble on the sea…

One day I’ll bare my soul and sing, while rivers flow, while time stands still, while home is just a vision in the sands of deserts where ocean waves come violently to kiss the rocky cliffs and we no longer look for those we miss…

Sometime around the beginning of February 2022 I decided that I wanted to write a Haiku but in the way that would be true to my experiences and true to my philosophy as a Westerner. But since I have always admired Eastern philosophies, art, discipline and the respect that they show their elders and their customs, I had to find a different way in order to be respectful and honour their very old traditions. Since there was no way for me to write as an Easterner, I came up with a European version, ergo the “Euro-Ku.”
To make a Euro-Ku, you must start with a photograph (an original, un-edited one, not a stock photograph that you download from the web). The picture has to, somehow, tell the story or the message/idea you want to write about visually. Then you write your poem in three verses, just like in the traditional Haiku, but without counting syllables. The verses can be as long as tomes if you want to make them, but they must make sense in the way of western logic and each must lead in to the other and one must read and understand clearly the message of the poem. That is all...

I love this form you developed. It holds true to its roots yet allows for a more direct Western philosophy. And your examples are always enjoyable!

    1. Thank you so much Brad, I really appreciate your kind words of encouragement and support. Perhaps the Euro-Ku is still in the development phase but it already allows for good communication and smashing good art. All the best.
