I did not realize there was more than one version of «The Scream». Is this a common practice among artists?

Yes, it is quite common for artists to paint several versions of a painting. Most of the «famous» paintings, like Mona Lisa and others are actually part of a series, or at least they’ve other versions. Sometimes artists take from their own paintings parts and create new paintings, this is true with greats like Picasso who painted «Guernica» based on other drawings he had made for the «Tauromaquia» series.
