JaZzArT Phase III

(Detail of #1 JaZzArT Phase III, watercolour and ink on special Canson paper)

Although I started this new phase in Autumn of 2021, I did not make the artwork public as I was still uncertain of what they meant and represented. But now I am quite certain they are what I want them to be.

And I want them to be strong, bold, entertaining, provocative and philosophical. How can I accomplish that?

By using a stronger abstract background and creating greater dynamic in the figures. This creates the balance and the colour, going from softer to stronger also adds to the dynamism of the work.

I hope you enjoy it. You can look for this painting (#1) and others in my Instagram: @Francisco_Bravo_Cabrera

Hope to hear what you think.

Cheers…

By explaining what you’re trying to achieve makes the painting even more interesting than it already was. Great stuff Francesc!

A beautiful mixture of the figurative and the abstract. I had no idea you could achieve such intense colors from watercolors. Lovely art, my friend!

This is one really speaks to me, Francisco. I think it’s the vivid colors and then I see your familiar motifs–it’s like seeing an old friend but a new and improved version.

I think sometimes we try too hard to determine what it means after-the-fact, when the the artistic struggle is over. Reminds me of the novelist visiting a writers’ workshop where his answer to the question «what does it mean, ‘the room was blue?'» was, «it means the damned room was blue!»

Lovely post, grand compositions, and good reading. Thank you, sir.

    1. You’re very welcome my friend. And I usually stick with the simplest, most direct answer, to me the room is blue, but what shade of blue?

I love this piece. Based on your explanations I definitely think you accomplished what you set out to do. The beautiful bold colors along with the strong figurative side of the work (which I love the broad black strokes) makes the movement almost jump out of the canvas in an energetic and three d sort of way. Great post!! 🤗

In form, this represents something of a departure for you. Strong background with suggestive and obvious line work superimposed. Nice effect, allowed background and foreground to work both independently and in concert.

    1. Thank you so much Espie, you are so right, it joins the foreground and the background, like a couple of jazz players would do, creating a solid, single ground…
